Every Pet Is A Masterpiece - Animal Behaviour For Photographers

From chaotic canines to contrary kitties, the key to capturing stunning animal portraits is understanding their behaviour. Knowing how to prevent, recognize, and manage stress will set you and your animal subjects up for a fun and successful session.

Over half of Canadian households own at least one dog or cat, and consider their pet to be a part of the family. Even if pets are not the main focus of your photography business, that’s over 50% of your clients who would probably love to include furry family members in their portraits!

During a 25-year career in animal care and welfare, Tracy learned to safely and humanely handle just about every kind of domestic and exotic pet you can imagine, as well as most of our native Canadian wildlife. She has her Master of Photographic Arts designation (PPOC) and is an Accredited Professional of Animal Imagery (AIM). Her playful and charismatic animal portraits have been awarded top honours in national and international image competitions.

Maclean’s Article: The Move

When one of my favourite clients (who also happens to be my wonderful vet, Dr. Adele Doucet DVM of Vet Champlain) was going to be featured in an article in Maclean’s magazine, I was flattered when she asked me to photograph her and her pets at their home in Memramcook.

Vodcast Interviews

From Clicks To Cash Vodcast

From a 25-year veterinary technician career in Toronto to a rural New Brunswick pet photography business that earns $10K sessions, Tracy Munson proves that celebrating pets while they're healthy creates heirloom-level emotional value that no equipment can replicate. In this episode of From Clicks To Cash, I sit down with Tracy Munson, a pet photographer who shoots dogs, cats, horses, iguanas, birds, and even chickens.

She was working at an animal shelter as a veterinary technician, a job she'd held for over 25 years. Photography was her creative escape. In 2012, she bought her first DSLR to photograph birds. She started taking adoption photos for rescue groups. People organically began requesting pet portrait sessions. By 2018, at age 45, she left Toronto for rural New Brunswick and was fully committed to pet photography.

What You'll Learn: ✅ Why pet portraits should celebrate healthy, happy animals (not just end-of-life moments) ✅ The hand-painted Photoshop technique that transforms low-res photos into heirloom art ✅ Building a successful pet photography business in a rural, economically depressed area ✅ Why animal behaviour knowledge matters more than camera gear

Hair of the Dog Podcast Interview

(Now the Freedom Focus Photography Podcast)

Tracy Munson's town in New Brunswick, Canada, has no stoplights. None. In Harvey Parish, a "traffic jam" is when cows or chickens are blocking the road.

And yet since moving to this tiny outpost in 2018, Tracy's managed to go full-time with her pet photography business AND find success with it. Hear how this week, in a fantastic conversation that covers moving, marketing, and being deeply suspicious of marked-down blouses.

What To Listen For:

  • The hair-dye method for building a business

  • What finally made her phone ring (it wasn't all that SEO work!)

  • The easiest way to build relationships with nonprofits

  • How Tracy sold out her book project sessions in just 5 days

  • What to consider when it comes to pricing psychology

  • When to work for free, and the kind of exposure that actually matters

Whether or not you live in a town as small as Tracy's, you'll find plenty of value in this week's episode. And you'll get a good laugh out of her original business name—I know I did!

The Companions Collective Podcast

Today's guest is Tracy Munson, my good friend from Hillsborough, New Brunswick, a small community about a half hour south of Moncton and right on the Petitcodiac River.

About a three-hour drive from the little town in Nova Scotia where I grew up.

But she's not from there. She's a Toronto girl, from the Big Smoke, where she plied her trade as a veterinary technician.

The work got to her, though.

Being in veterinary medicine is hard. It may be the only industry we know where it is a responsibility to end life.

Tracy recognized she was in burnout mode and started planning her escape … to becoming a pet photographer. She's now a recognized leader in Canadian pet photography and an award winner in both pet photography and landscape photography.

Today, we discuss careers in vet medicine and the trials and tribulations that lie within.

Editpalooza Tutorial

I was honoured to be asked to submit an editing tutorial to the Editpalooza Virtual Summit on post-processing techniques for pet photographers.

For my video, I chose to show how I edited a photo of two adorable pugs on the beach near Bouctouche, NB. Sunset was nearing, creating challenging backlighting conditions, especially since one of the pugs was black.

Unfortunately, registration for the summit has closed, so it can no longer be accessed for new purchases.
